Southern Sem display

Each summer the Von Canon Library staff put together a Southern Seminary display. It is by far our most popular display of the year -- and this year, it has outgrown the two library display cases so it's set up in the Fawson Alumni House.

Display

The display has lot of old photos. Some from the recent past,

1920

and some from a bit before that.

50th_anniversary

There are familiar faces (the Robeys on their 50th anniversary)

and familiar places, although dressed a little differently.

The display was created by library worker (and recent graduate) Sarah Crowley with help from library staff, especially Megan Ondricek. We're grateful to Alumni Relations Coordinator John Feinauer, who made space for the display in the Southern Sem room of the Fawson House.

The display will be up through August during regular business hours, If you are in the area, stop by and see it!

The Fawson Alumni House is at 2574 Chestnut Ave., across from Chandler Hall.

So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, goodbye ...

Library_ladies

It's always difficult to say goodbye at graduation each year, and this year was no different -- in fact, it was more difficult because I'm losing seven library workers: Five graduated, one is getting married and one is going on an LDS mission. Lots of goodbyes.
My husband reminds me each year that if I didn't get so attached, graduation wouldn't be so hard. That's what we do here at the Von Canon Library, though -- we get attached to students and student workers especially.

Congratulations Raili, Cassie, Elora, Sarah, Whitney, Taegan and Cameron (and library alumni Kimberly and Hannah). Go and do great things, ladies! And stay in touch so we can continue to celebrate milestones with you.

COOKIES!

Cookies

It's finals week at Southern Virginia, so that means COOKIES IN THE VON CANON LIBRARY!

The library staff is continuing the beloved tradition of providing cookies to students during finals week. Why do we make dozens and dozens and dozens of cookies? Because we love our students, and cookies make them smile ...

Best of luck on your exams!

Return materials or face the dreaded Library Hold

As the Spring 2012 semester winds down, please don't forget to return your library materials!

All materials are due by Thursday, April 19 (the last day of class). Failure to return materials will result in the dreaded Library Hold, an ogre that prevents you from receiving your diploma, registering for classes or obtaining a transcript. No one enjoys a visit from this monster, and returning your materials not only keeps him away but allows the library staff to reshelve items and get ready for the May term.

Should you need the library materials past April 19, please stop by the library and let us know.

Over 7,000 acres are currently burning in Rockbridge, Alleghany, Craig, Shenandoah and Page counties, according to the Virginia Department of Forestry Press Release issued yesterday.

To get reliable information on the forest fires in Virginia:

Updates on the fire in western Rockbridge County are being sent out by Alert Rockbridge as needed. You can sign up for updates here: https://www.alertrockbridge.com/index.php?CCheck=1

Finally, if you wish to volunteer to help support the fire crews (right now meals are being organized and prepared, but there will be other needs) you can call (540) 460-0301.

Peeps visit the Von Canon Library

It's a beautiful spring day as the Peeps pull up to the Von Canon Library for a studious visit.

Pull_up
They find a spot to park right away.

Parking
Unfortunately, it's in a no-parking zone.

Enter

The Peeps head into the library, carrying cellphones and schlepping a very heavy backpack.

Computer_1

To begin their research, they head to the computers, like the college students they are.

Computer_2_wiki

What's this? Wikipedia! For your project's sake, you'd better be using the references at the bottom ...

Some Peeps use the library for more than studying.

Dvds
This pair is looking for a good Friday night DVD in the workroom.

Headphones
These two have found something interesting to watch on YouTube. Thanks for using the headphones, and being considerate of other Peeps using the library!

Magazine

A couple of Peeps are enjoying the latest issue of Sports Illustrated.

Nap

And as always, the blue sofa calls for a comfortable nap.

A few Peeps are using the specialized software in the Computer Lab.

Partying_in_the_computer_lab_1
Peeps!! There is no eating oatmeal and drinking orange pop in the Computer Lab!

Spinning_chair

And the chairs are for sitting in; not for spinning!

Pda

Oh, Peep. You came to the library to study ... quit flirting with pretty library worker Whitney.

Two_in_chair
Please, only one Peep to a chair ...

Feet_on_table
but putting your feet up on the coffee table is perfectly OK.

Railing

"I'm glad you found some good books for your project," says Melissa. "But please don't call over the railing to your friends. Your Peep voice travels well in the Von Canon Library."

Calling
Rather than walk downstairs, the Peep decides to call her friends.
Oops_book
The useful books are good, but a bit heavy and hard to move.

A few Peeps decided to study for their upcoming Art History exam, but they left their textbooks at home.

Art_hist_1

Art History textbooks are very big

Art_hist_2

and difficult for Peeps to carry.

Bedford

This industrious Peep remembers what he learned in Information Literacy and is using the Bedford Handbook to cite an article from a database in APA style.

Research_help

He is not sure his Senior Paper citation is correct, so the soon-to-be-graduating Peep asks Megan for assistance.

Eat

Megan!! This is not good customer service at all!

Cut
These Peeps are making flyers for upcoming Student Senate elections. Careful using the paper cutter.
Cut_oops

Oh no! We've had a Peep-cident!

Mending_peep_2
It's a very good thing that there are EMTs on campus!

Print
A group of Peeps have decided to print out an article for a class presentation.
Pay_prints

They have neglected to bring their student id cards, and don't have any money with them, either. Uh, oh. Mean ol' Melissa insists they pay for their prints.

Check_out
The Peeps working on Art History have found some books they can handle and are ready for library worker Gina to check them out.
Opinion
One Peep has nice things to say about Gina's help
Bell
and one can't resist ringing the bell.

After checking out their books, the Peeps head home.

Leaving

The backpack is heavier than ever! And one Peep has left his cell phone in the library.

Parking_ticket
The day at the Von Canon Library doesn't end well, though -- their parking spot has drawn the attention of OPSS! Next time, they will park in the lot.

(Post by Melissa, Megan and the amazing Von Canon Library student workers. Thanks, Millikin.)
